The CANactions Urban School is a non-profit interdisciplinary platform of postgraduate education in Urban Studies, which has no analogues in Ukraine. This is an educational project aimed to become a moderator among young professionals, active communities, business and government to develop a common strategy for the development of Ukrainian cities.
First Urban School was held in cooperation with Teple Misto Platform. The topic of the first academic year of School – urbanism.ua: (RE) START. This is the process of interdisciplinary study of Ukrainian cities, which offers to reconsider basic mechanisms of planning and development of urban areas. What is a modern city? What is the specificity of Ukrainian cities? Who determines their development nowadays? How to make this process more efficient and open?
The study was carried out within the studio of famous Swiss urbanist Urs Thomann, who had been the deputy director of “Center of Vinnitsa municipal planning and architecture” for a long time.
Ivano-Frankivsk was elected as a case study for the first Studio. The city features the presence of urban, social, cultural and business initiatives and may become a model of modern approach to urban development for other cities in Ukraine. Training took place from 14 September to 18 December 2015.
During the School students had the opportunity to:
– get practical skills necessary for research, analysis, argumentation from leading experts from Spain, Latvia, Serbia, the UK, Germany, USA and others.
– implement the knowledge gained during the week of micro-cases in Kyiv and Lviv.
– conduct a full research of Ivano-Frankivsk with preparatory, field and analytical phases.
– improve skills in research, data handling, working with the community, working in groups with colleagues in real context.
– create a new concept of city development with a focus on different vectors, based on research.
Urban Constitution for Ivano-Frankivsk was the result of the first Studio of CANactions School of Urban Studies.
